Charities that are doing life-changing work. In our previous episode on Monday we had an incredibly powerful conversation that I still keep on thinking about. I spoke with Michael Jarvis from the Campaign Against Living Miserably (C.A.L.M.) which is a UK-based charity dedicated to suicide prevention.
Honestly, the conversation was impactful and very insightful and Michael shared some eye-opening facts like for example that one in five people will experience suicidal thoughts at some point in their life but he also shared hope that even a small conversation can save someone's life. One thing that really stuck with me is when he said that their mission is to help people end their misery not their lives and people who feel suicidal they often say they don't want to die it's more that they kind of want that pain and misery that they are experiencing to stop and when you are in that position when you're struggling it can quite easily spiral down and become like there's no way out. Michael also said that if you are concerned that someone is struggling it's better to ask don't be afraid to openly use the word suicide talking about it will never increase the risk it can only help someone feel less isolated.
That conversation is a powerful reminder that help is out there and that no one has to face their struggles alone. If you haven't listened to that episode yet 484 I encourage you to go back and give it your time because the more we understand the signs the more we can talk openly about mental health and the bigger difference we can make and if you feel inspired to support CALM you can visit their website at thecalmzone.net whether you choose to donate fundraise or simply share the resources every action helps spread hope and prevent suicide. I am grateful to be part of podcast zone this year and to use this platform to shine a light on a cause as important as CALM and I am grateful to you for listening because just by tuning in you are already helping to break the stigma.
Take care of yourself check in on your loved ones and remember there's always a reason to stay. See you in the next episode.
